The Fin Foundation at Harelson Elementary Family Science Night

The Fin Foundation conducted a learning table at the Harelson Elementary School Family Science Night the past Thursday! We had two volunteers helping us out. Thanks to Jeff Mundt and Jan Pipes for taking the time to be there! We spoke with over 200 hundred families about the state of our oceans and e animals found there! We showed our artifacts and the kids got to see first hand how big whales can be! It was a great night!

Meeting with Authors…

I had a great lunch/ meeting with Betty Hupp and Marilyn Malone, the authors of a wonderful book called The Edge of the Sea of Cortez : Tidewalkers Guide to the Upper Gulf of California! The book is an amazing guide to all of the inverts and organisms found as you walk the tidepools of The Sea of Cortez! I have gone through this book several times and always find myself smiling as it takes me back to the trips I made while teaching at the University of Arizona with Dr. D.A. Thomson! The authors put a huge amount of work into the design, scientific information, and flow of this book! If you are interested in the perfect book to take with you as you explore the sea, this would be a great choice! The Fin Foundation is working on being able to provide this book to some teachers who have committed to teaching marine science in their curriculum!

Ruth Brown Elementary School – “Our Amazing Oceans!”

  • April 14th, 2011 – 10:00am to 3:00pm
  • Ruth Brown Elementary School – Blythe, Ca.
  • 130 4th, 5th, and 6th graders – 3 presentations
  • “Our Amazing Oceans!”

Up close learning at Ruth Brown Elementary school!

We returned to Blythe for another round of presentations! We love coming out to Blythe as this is the perfect example of what we want to achieve! A school set in the desert far from the oceans where marine science isnt given much of a chance! We take the opportunity and run with it!

The kids seemed to love every minute of our talks and had great questions and lots of super insights! Hopefully, we answered all of their questions! We look forward to coming back again next year!

Thanks to Taryn Beard for having us out to your classroom and thanks to your sister for being on our Honorary Board!
