Great presentation at Schumaker this morning! 3rd grade classes combined together for a totally good group! Lots of great questions that led to little discussions on sharks, ecology and saving the planet! We look forward to coming back to Schumaker soon!

Love the 5th graders at Schumaker Elementary School! There is a reason why there is a game show called “Are you smarter than a 5th grader?” and it is because those kids are on top of it! They knew so much, were really curious and had great questions! I had fun with them from start to finish and they were still looking for more information after an hour and 15minutes!  We even got Mrs. Miller involved with the penguin egg walk and had the kids laughing while learning! So much fun!

Adrian went along on this presentation and added some great insight on some of the  more dangerous creatures found in Australia (after nearly 2 years studying there) and that is one of the reasons we enjoy having our volunteers attend these presentations!

Amphi Middle School – “Our Amazing Oceans” and careers in Marine Science

  • November 10th, 2009 – 9:30am to 10:30 am
  • Amphi Middle School – Tucson, Az
  • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, 60+ students
  • Our Amazing Oceans – Marine Science Careers

Today was a great morning presenting to the kids at Amphi Middle School! We focused early on what kinds of careers the kids could have in the marine science field then turned to our marine artifacts and taught them about sharks and some of the other critters found in the ocean! Loved the enthusiasm and the questions that the kids had! The hour went by so fast!

Thanks to Mr. Campillo for asking the fin foundation to come in!

Pima Community College – Shark Presentation

  • Nov. 9th, 2009  2:40pm-5:00pm
  • Pima Community College Marine Biology Course, West Campus
  • Bio 183, 34 students
  • Shark lecture including ecology, history, and conservation

It was great getting back into the collegiate level teaching as we gave the shark lecture at Pima Community College in Tucson. I enjoyed being able to get deep into details of shark anatomy as well as discussing their history, cultural significance and conservation! The students were attentive and seemed to be truely interested in saving sharks!

We were fortunate that several of the students offered to volunteer to help the Fin Foundation on future presentations across the city. Hopefully we can get the new volunteers up to speed and assisting our current staff soon!

Thanks to Dr. Maluf for helping to arrange our presentation!

St. Mark’s Elementary School – Our Amazing Oceans

  • November 5th, 2009 – 1:30pm to 2:30pm
  • St. Mark’s Elementary – El Paso, Texas
  • 3rd thru 6th grade, 100 students
  • “Our Amazing Oceans”

We had a wonderful experience presenting to St. Mark’s! The kids were energetic and had lots of ocean knowledge! We were able to use the mixed media presentation along with our artifacts! We used the 9ft tiger shark as well! What an impression that fiberglass shark makes as kids walk into the room! We hope to use it more often!

Thanks to Ms. Smith for setting up the presentation and to executive board member Paul Zaman for joining in on all of our presentations in El Paso this week!
