Had lots of fun today presenting to the 2nd graders at White Elementary school! This presentation was scheduled way back in September! The kids had a great time as we went through all of the different kinds of animals found in our oceans. We also talked about our oceans health and how these kids can help to save animals like Polar Bears and sea turtles! We look forward to coming back to this school to conduct more presentations, perhaps to the whole school!

Thanks to Board member Paul Zaman for volunteering to join in at the presentation and to Kelly Mack-Faulkner for having us in her classroom!

The Fin Foundation working in partnership with Biosphere II and the Uof A…

biosphere rockGREAT NEWS as the Fin Foundation works to continue spreading marine science and ocean conservation across the Southwest! We have been meeting with the people from Biosphere II and the Uof A to set up a partnership in education where we will be adding more marine science content to the Biosphere II’s educational program. By adding the use of our artifacts and volunteer personnel, we hope to increase the overall ocean experience for visitors to the ocean area of the Biosphere II. And in conjunction with the U of A’s summer teacher’s programs, the Fin Foundation will be working to increase local educator’s knowledge about the ocean’s importance in the desert and what we can do to impliment ocean education in our schools!

In addition to all of that, we will also be placing divers with communication systems into the Ocean at Biosphere II so visitors can ask questions while we are working with Biosphere II scientists in the Ocean Area! This should add a new level for the visitors to the Biosphere II and help to make connections to our oceans!

We are looking forward our new partnership starting the last part of December ’09! It will be a great way to leap into the New Year!

JCC signA wonderful day at the JCC! We had about 30 kids gathered around as we talked about the ocean and the critters found there! Lots of fun stories and the chance to watch their eyes as the shells and whale bones and shark jaws were shown! Amazing to see their excitement! We always love seeing new faces and this group was almost all new kids! Thank you so much to the staff for bringing us back in again! Looking forward to seeing you soon!

Ruth Brown Elementary School – “Our Amazing Oceans”

  • December 14th, 2009 – 9am-12noon
  • Ruth Brown Elementary School – Blythe, Arizona
  • 200+ students – 5th and 6th grade
  • “Our Amazing Oceans”

Took the long drive to Blythe to do two presentations at Ruth Brown Elementary School! What a great time we had! Lots of really excited 6th graders just overflowing with energy! They had questions already written out for The Fin Foundation since they had done some prep work before hand on the ocean! We spent a lot of time with each group and then spent time at the end going over some of the questions… Special treat as we were able to show them a reindeer hide also (not exactly a marine mammal, but it is Christmas time so…) We will hopefully be able to set up additional presentations as we continue to reach out to schools traditionally skipped due to being a little out of the way! Pictures to follow!

Zoo Lights at the Reid Park Zoo…

Another successful night at the Zoo! We had our new Polar Bear costume ready and lots of great volunteers working the artifacts! I can’t say for sure, but I believe we had a longer line than Santa Claus! (I know we will still get presents cause Santa stopped by beforehand and looked at our stuff too!) Looking forward to another night of fun this evening as we finish out the second weekend of doing this! Looks like a yearly event for us now! 🙂

Thanks to Jeri, Brianna and Paul, Caroline, Adrian, Michael, Amanda,  and of course my other bear in crime, George! And to all of the ROTC guys lead by Jesse…. hope the zoo didn’t work you too hard!
