Desert Dolphins – “Top Predators Disappearing”

  • March 16th – 7pm
  • Desert Dolphins Monthly Meeting, El Parador Resturant – Tucson, Az
  • 50-75 people
  • “Top Predators Disappearing” questions and discussion session

The Desert Dolphins presentation was loads of fun! After arriving early for dinner and social time, the meeting got started and it was great hearing about all the diving and experiences the members were having travelling the world! We began our presentation sharing some of the newest artifacts the Fin Foundation has received (being that we are so proud to be taking these items to schools!) then got started talking about the loss of sharks and polar bears in the wild! We used a new format for the presentation (keynote for the Ipad) and it all went off without a hitch! Lots of great follow up questions! and I loved that this well informed and tech savvy group kept me on my toes (gestation period for polar bears – 8 months!)! I also really liked meeting some new volunteers for TFF who introduced themselves to me that night!

Thanks to my mom and brother for joining me and watching as I continue to do what I love so much! Bringing the Ocean to the desert!

  • 4th grade, 60+ students

Whales and more!

Back at Luguna this week to follow up our talk on sharks with a presentation on Whales and other marine mammals! Great fun showing the students the artifacts we have recently acquired (like our walrus jaw bone and 6′ long baleen) in addition to the loads of additional material we always have! The whale bones always impress! It was great to see them putting all the science together and seeing the differences between fish and mammals and in seeing how the ocean continues to change! Great school and dedicated teachers!

This presentation was done on the same weekend as the Book Festival so there were lots and lots of people wandering around the Museum looking in all the rooms! Good to see all the positive reactions when they saw ocean stuff!

Our 1st presentation down in the new Marine Lab in the Flandrau Science Center! What fun to be back at the U of A with all the marine science artifacts around! We had a great time talking with all of the young Girl Scouts about the ocean and some of the wildlife found there! They were asking great questions and seemed to really enjoy the sharks (ok, turtles and dolphins too!)

Adrian getting ready for the science night!

We returned to St. Ambrose for their science night and had a great time talking with students and parents! Lots of great energy as people wandered in and out of our classroom area looking at the artifacts! We brought in all the fun stuff like shark jaws and whale bones! Adrian volunteered to help us out again and he had lots of fun as the kids did the penguin parent walk! He has become the grand master at running this activity!

St. Ambrose once again showed us how amazing schools in Tucson can be and we look forward to spending more time there in the future!
