Ocean discovery in the desert!

We had a great presentation out at Tanque Verde Elementary School speaking to the 6th grade classes! We love coming to schools where the teachers take the initiative to add an ocean section to their curriculum! These students were on the ball! They knew lots of great things about the ocean and we could easily see their scientific minds hard at work figuring out questions as we asked them about things like shell design and predator/prey relationships! Thanks to Mrs. Jennifer Skaggs for setting up the presentation and to Susan Stewart for volunteering to help with this presentation!

Kids on the outside stage!

Kids at the outside stage!

It was a fantastic day for us as we went back to White Elementary and spoke to all the k-2nd graders! We set up on their outside stage and had the perfect weather to do our presentation! The kids were amazing as we went through all of the basics for them and let them get the hands on learning experience that makes science so much fun! We even got the teachers involved with things as we did the penguin egg run! We also had a small group of special needs children join us and they were wonderful, and we got to see just how strong some of them were when they lifted the whale rib bone high over their head! These kids are developing some great learning skills at this school and I look forward to returning tomorrow for the older kids!

Flowing Wells High School (Honors Biology Class) – Inverts!

  • March 24, 2010 – 12:00 to 2:00pm
  • Flowing Wells High School – Tucson, Az
  • 10th-11th grade, 25 students
  • “Inverts and more!”

We had the chance to present to the Honors Biology class today… what a great experience! It was wonderful to see their minds working at full speed taking in the information and then coming up with new questions! That is what science is all about if you ask me! There are bound to be several future scientists in that group! The funniest moments still come up when we are asked about reproduction in the ocean! How do we answer that! But we managed and the kids learned a thing or two Im sure! Thanks to Adrian for his assistance on the presentation and for all his continued support for the Fin Foundation! It’s great to have a second resource when it comes to the science side of this stuff!

divers in the ocean!

Had a fun day out at the Biosphere II! We get the chance to meet people from so many different places as they come to Arizona and the world’s “highest”ocean! We met people from all over the U.S., from England, Germany, and a whole bus load of kids from Hermosillo Mexico! I love seeing their faces light up when they get to touch the teeth on the Great White Shark jaw! So fun! We will be back for the Earth Day celebration and are looking forward to putting the divers in the ocean again! Thanks to the Dive Shop and to our volunteers Matt, Ansley, Peter and Phelina!

Come visit the Fin Foundation as we once again join with the Biosphere II in their Ocean Education Area for a hands on display of marine artifacts such as shark jaws and whale bones!
